The Traitor by T.J. London

Publication Date: October 26, 2018
eBook; 574 pages
Series: The Rebels and Redcoats Saga, Book #2
Genre: Historical Fiction
Spy. Liar. Scoundrel. Redcoat. Provocateur and spy for His Majesty, Captain John Carlisle returns to Fort Niagara with the secrets he stole in the arms of the beautiful Oneida innkeeper, Dellis McKesson. Determined to complete his mission and clear his name, he’ll see justice done—and damn the consequences. Now, he finds himself drawn into political intrigue as the British prepare to launch a three-pronged attack that will bring the Rebels and the Mohawk River Valley to its knees. A dangerous revelation finds Dellis as whispers of intrigue insinuate her beloved is not all that he seems. Unwilling to wait for her lover’s return, she sets out in search of the truth as the Onieda begin negotiations with the Rebels, breaking the neutrality agreement with the crown. A bold move that will stoke a fire between the brother tribes and lead to a bloody inter-confederacy war—one Dellis predicted, and one John incited. While war between the colonies and the King smolders, the punishing winter of 1777 allows the perfect opportunity for old enemies to settle scores, lying in wait, ready to exploit John’s one weakness—his heart. John is not an innocent man. The truth he’s long tried to hide from can no longer be ignored, the ghosts of the past seeking justice, and karma wanting payment for sins so dark they cannot be forgiven.

My Review: 5 out of 5 stars

Thanks to author T.J. London and blog tour host Amy Bruno of HF Virtual Book Tours for allowing me to take part in the blog tour and providing me copies of the books. The cover art for both of these books was amazing. I have been on a historical fiction kick for awhile now and these books did not disappoint. I haven't read many during the American Revolutionary time period so this was interesting to me.
The story begins with Lieutenant John Carlisle, a skilled map maker wishing to win back his commission by working undercover to find out the relationship between the Iroquois and the Colonial Army. John sets up his headquarters at the inn of a half-breed woman, Dellis McKesson, our heroine. Dellis' tragic past is linked to John's and he tries to trick the tribe into a peace treaty with Britain.
I loved both of these extremely well-written books. The research that went into them was evident. The two main characters were complex and realistic. The pacing was spot-on and held my interest throughout. Fans of historical fiction with a dash of romance are sure to enjoy this series. I can't wait for the story to continue in Spring 2019 with The Turncoat, book #3 in the Rebels and Redcoats Saga.

The clues for a close-to-the-heart missing person’s case heat up when Chris Matheson starts chipping away at the ice on the cold case. When Sandy Lipton and her unborn child disappear, the court of public opinion finds young Chris Matheson guilty. Decades later, the retired FBI agent returns home to discover that the cloud of suspicion cast over him and his family has never lifted. With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris Matheson starts chipping away at the ice on this cold case to uncover what had happened to Sandy and her baby and the clues are getting hot!

My Review
Ice is book #1 of The Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series and my first Lauren Carr read. The author makes the setting of Charles Town/Shenandoah Valley West Virginia come to life. Great hook at the beginning to pique my interest.

The story starts with 18 year old Sandy Lipton and her unborn child disappearing. The main character is Chris Matheson an ex-FBI agent who has recently moved back to his hometown after the death of his wife in a terrorist attack. Twenty-four years ago Chris was a suspect in Sandy Lipton’s disappearance. Sandy had been pregnant and claimed that Christ was the father. Chris denied he was the father and was going to have the baby’s DNA tested when it was born but Sandy came up missing before that. Even though Chris was cleared by the authorities many people thought he had something to do with it.

Chris is asked to join a group known as The Geezer Squad which is a group of retired law enforcement crime fighters who work secretly on cold case files. Once Chris joins the group they decide to investigate the disappearance of Sandy Lipton and to once and for all clear the name of Chris Matheson.

My favorite parts of the book were involving The Geezer Squad. I found the members of the group to be entertaining and pretty funny at times. Dog lovers are also sure to enjoy Chris’s dog Sterling, a former police dog that was wounded in action. Ice was full of mystery and suspense making for a fast and exhilarating read. The dialog between characters was realistic. I hope to read more in this series.

Thank you Lauren Carr, Acorn Book Services, and iRead Book Tours for providing me with a copy of this book to read.
