#BlogBlitz When The Waters Recede by Graham Smith @GrahamSmith1972 @rararesources #BookReview #CrimeFiction @Joni2345zb

I want to start by saying thank you to Graham Smith and Rachel's Random Resources for a copy of this book and an opportunity to take part in the When The Waters Recede Blog Blitz.

About The Book

When a car is pulled from raging floodwaters with a dead man in the front and the decapitated body of an evil woman in the boot, Cumbria’s Major Crimes Team are handed the investigation.

The woman is soon recognised, but the man cannot be identified and this leads the team and their former leader, Harry Evans, into areas none of them want to visit.

Before they know it, they’re dealing with protection scams and looking for answers to questions they didn’t know needed to be asked.

My Review
This is my second Graham Smith book and I am totally in love with this series. Harry Evans is again working as a police consultant with his old Major Crimes Team. I love the realistic interaction between characters especially Harry and Lauren in this one. Once again the author hooked me from the beginning with a great opening...a stolen car was found semi-submerged in flood waters with a deceased unknown man driving and a decapitated body of a woman in the boot. I would highly recommend this to all who love crime fiction. Harry Evans is one of my all-time favorite characters of crime novels. I can't wait to read more!

Title: Trouble in Glamour Town
Author: S.R. Mallery
Publication Date: November 12, 2017

Murder. Corruption. Romance. Movie stars. A modern day TV shoot ‘em up?

No. It’s 1926 Old Hollywood, and a film producer is gunned down in cold blood. In comes Rosie, a pretty bit-player, who, in spite of her stage-mother’s expectations, just longs to be happy. Silent screen idols Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson, Lon Chaney, and Rudolph Valentino float in and out, as Los Angeles’ corruption is exposed, the era described, and a chase to find the killer revs up before there’s another hit.

“Trouble in Glamour Town is very historically accurate, portraying the real workings of the Hollywood sleaze, dishonesty and corruption happening at that time. S.R. Mallery is a gifted author who drew me into the story from the first word and kept me reading until the very last page…Trouble in Glamour Town is an old fashioned type of murder mystery story and is a very good read.” – Trudi LoPreto for Readers’ Favorite

My Review
Trouble in Glamour Town, a historical mystery set in 1920’s Hollywood, is my first read by S.R. Mallery. The book begins with a film producer being gunned down in cold blood from a long distance and piqued my interest from the start. The cover art was amazing.

Detective Frank Lozano is the straight-arrow detective investigating the homicide. Rosie Paige is an actress trying to make it big as a Hollywood star while trying to keep her morals which is rare in her business. I really liked both of these authentic characters. Historical fiction/mystery is one of my favorite genres and the 1920’s old Hollywood is also a favorite time period/setting. The author mixes in real celebrities from the time period like Clara Bow, Lon Chaney, Gloria Swanson, and Rudolph Valentino. It was fun for me to look up and read more about them.

The mix of historical mystery, a little romance, and old Hollywood makes for a great read. I recommend this to those who love historical mysteries and 1920’s Hollywood. Loved it!! Just an overall great book. Thanks to S.R. Mallery and Amy Bruno at HF Virtual Book Tours for the opportunity to review this book.

Title: The Adulterer's Wife
Author: Leigh Russell
Publisher: Bloodhound Books
Publication Date: May 7, 2018

Julie is devastated to learn that her husband, Paul, is having an affair. It seems her life can’t get any worse - until she comes home to find his dead body in their bed.

When the police establish he was murdered, Julie is the obvious suspect.

To protect her son from the terrible situation, Julie sends the teenage boy to his grandparents in Edinburgh while she fights to prove her innocence.

With all the evidence pointing to her, the only way she can escape conviction is by discovering the true identity of her husband’s killer.

But who really did murder Paul?

The truth is never straightforward…

My Review
The Adulterer’s Wife is my first read by Leigh Russell. The main character Julie finds out her husband Paul is having an affair. She is understandably upset and is wondering what to do when she finds him dead in their bed. Because the police find out Paul was a cheater they assume Julie is the murderer. Since the police suspect her, Julie feels her only chance is to find out who the real killer is.

I had mixed feelings about Julie’s character. At times she aggravated me when she was doing things that seemed to make her situation worse. At other times I felt bad for her and her situation. None of the other characters were really that remarkable or likable.

This was a quick read for me since I was unable to put it down. I would recommend this to others who enjoy this genre. I can’t wait to read more from this author. Thank you Leigh Russell, NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for providing me with a copy of this book to read.

Rory Norton didn’t always make his living as a motorbike instructor and he went to great lengths to leave his past life behind, to start again.

He thought he had succeeded, until the body of a missing woman is discovered under the floor of his cottage. Only then do the guilt and shame of his wife’s mysterious, untimely death and the accusations about his connection to the missing woman combine to break him.

The question is not how the missing woman died but why, and who is responsible?

Sometimes the truth stinks.

My Review
This is my first A.B. Morgan book and it was a good one. I loved the title and the cover...very cool!! The story starts with a body of a missing woman being discovered under the floor of Rory Norton's cottage. Hooked me from the beginning!

The main characters were Rory and Anna. Rory makes a living as a motorbike instructor. Anna is an investigative reporter. They meet each other when Anna takes a motorbike course taught by Rory. I liked Rory as a character and I found myself feeling sorry for Anna because of her troubled backstory.

The author was able to hold my interest from the beginning. I would recommend this book to those who love psychological thrillers. I will definitely read more by this author. Thanks to Bloodhound Books and A.B. Morgan for the opportunity to review this book and participate in #BlogBlitz.

Author Bio
A.B. Morgan (The tartan is Welsh: Morgan) Married to an overgrown child with a beard and too many motorbikes, Alison Morgan lives in a corner of a field in North Bedfordshire and is making the most of a mid-life crisis. The Morgans are determined not to grow old gracefully or to be seen wearing beige and can be found exploring life through a love of live music, anything with an engine, the sea, mountains, rugby, proper pubs and fascinating people.

Alison worked for the NHS for nearly thirty years, twenty of those within mental health services, at the front line. She eventually became the manager of a countywide community service for people experiencing their first episode of psychosis. Much to her frustration, her heart decided to develop an electrical fault, which forced her to sit down for more than five minutes and her career juddered to a halt. Not one for thumb twiddling, she took up position in front of a computer with a plan to write a set of clinical guidelines for assessment of psychosis but instead a story, which had been lurking in her mind for several years, came tumbling out.

Her first two novels, A Justifiable Madness and Divine Poison, were inspired by her career as a psychiatric nurse and her fascination with the extremes of human behaviour. Then she stepped sideways and wrote a gritty psychological thriller, The Camera Lies. All published by Bloodhound Books, Alison’s novels have received excellent reviews and inspired many an interesting debate. Above all, they are entertaining reads and, despite dark subjects, will raise a smile.

#BlogBlitz Don't You Dare by A.J. Waines @Bloodhoundbook @AJWaines @Joni2345zb #PsychologicalThriller

Pleased to be participating in another #BlogBlitz hosted by Bloodhound Books one of my favorite publishers! Today I am reviewing Don't You Dare by A.J. Waines

Book Details
Title: Don't You Dare
Author: A.J. Waines
Publisher: Bloodhound Books
Publication Date: May 8, 2018

What if your daughter becomes your enemy?

When barmaid, Rachel, discovers her soon-to-be-married daughter, Beth, pinned down by a stranger in the pub cellar, Rachel lashes out in panic and the intruder ends up dead. In desperation, Rachel convinces Beth they should cover up the crime and go ahead with the planned wedding in one month’s time.

Rachel, however, has her own reasons for not involving the police.

Hiding their dreadful secret is harder than they both imagined and as the big day approaches and the lies multiply, Beth becomes a liability. Rachel looks on in dismay at the hen party when, after too many drinks, Beth declares she’s about to make a special announcement. But before Beth can say a word, she disappears...

When two people share a chilling secret, can both hold their nerve?

This book explores the dark side of a mother-daughter relationship when pushed to the limit.

It will appeal to fans of authors like Ruth Ware, Clare Mackintosh and C.L. Taylor.

My Review
Don’t You Dare is my first read by A.J. Waines. I totally enjoyed this book right from the beginning as chapter one hooked me right from the get-go…great opening!

The chapters alternate points of view between Rachel the mother and her daughter Beth. These two find themselves having committed a crime and then trying to cover it up. I found it interesting how Rachel and Beth each handle what they have done. The author cleverly shares their thoughts while switching from each of their points of view. They each have their own way of dealing with the burden of guilt and the cover-up…the anxiety involved while they wait to see if the police are going to end up questioning them.

Another part of the story that I found interesting is Rachel’s secret from the past. Throughout the book the author periodically reminds the reader of a past secret and Beth wants to find out from her Grandad but he has dementia and can only share bits and pieces of the mystery at a time. I thought the author did a great job presenting it this way and kept me interested throughout. The buildup at the end of the book was awesome and nicely wrapped up. Overall just a great read. I will be adding this author to my favorites list. Thank you A.J. Waines and Bloodhound Books for providing me with a copy of this book to read.
